Why I Don’t Do New Year’s Resolutions (and What I Do Instead)

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. It’s not because I don’t believe in growth or change. Quite the opposite, actually. I’ve just found that forcing myself into big commitments during the darkest, coldest part of the year doesn’t work for me. Winter is a time for rest, stillness and reflection. I embrace a slower, gentler approach to starting the year.

Resting, Not Rushing

Wintertime feels like nature’s nudge to slow down. The days are short, the nights are long, and everything about this season whispers, “Rest.” So, I listen.

After the holiday busyness, I give myself permission to recharge. I cosy up with books, sip warm drinks, and allow myself to focus inward. Resting now sets the foundation for the energy and creativity I’ll need when the season shifts.

Reflecting on the Year

Instead of resolutions, I might spend time reflecting on the year that just passed. What felt good? What didn’t? Journaling is a big part of this for me. I might write down moments I’m proud of or things I’m grateful for.

I might also look through my Happy List (a list I keep in the Notes app on my phone with things I am grateful for or makes me happy) to remind me of the pleasures of the year. I also love to look through photos and look back on my favourite memories.

Sometimes I don't do this at all, and save it for when the season changes. For this time of year I focus on rest. After the holiday chaos, I might restock on my daily rituals that keep me grounded—like a short morning stretch, mindful morning tea, or taking walks in the crisp air. These little routines are my anchors, and they help me feel steady and focused.

Spring Ritual

When the seasons change, that’s when I feel the pull to focus on the future. As spring approaches, my energy naturally shifts, and I feel ready to plant new seeds—literally and figuratively.

I like to set intentions for the year ahead, aligning my goals with what truly matters to me. I like to do a simple but meaningful ritual, whether it’s lighting a candle, meditating, or writing down what I want to create in my life.

For now, though, I let my daily rituals do the work.

Embracing the Seasons

I think there’s beauty in aligning with the natural rhythms of the seasons. Winter is for resting and dreaming. Spring is for growth and action. When I flow with the seasons, I feel more connected to myself and let go of pressure to “get it all right” on January 1st.

Take this time to rest, reflect, and trust that the right time for change will come. After all, we’re not meant to bloom year-round—and that’s perfectly okay.

I hope you have a peaceful, restful start to your year.
