Cycle Syncing: Flowing with your Menstrual Cycle

Have you ever felt like your energy levels are on a rollercoaster ride, with some days feeling like you can conquer the world and others leaving you exhausted before lunch? If you're nodding along, you're not alone. For years, I thought this was just a part of life, something to power through with an extra cup of coffee (spoiler I quit coffee). That all changed when I discovered the concept of cycle syncing, and let me tell you, it has been a game-changer!

Once I started tracking my cycle and learning about the specific needs and strengths of each phase, everything shifted. I began listening to my body's signals, planning high-energy tasks and social activities during my inner spring and summer, and reserving quieter, more introspective activities for inner autumn and winter. My energy levels became more consistent, my cravings less intense, and I felt more in tune with myself than ever before.

What your Cycle is telling you

Your cycle is an important part of your overall health. If you have an irregular cycle or suffer from bad PMS, it can be your body trying to tell you that something is off balance. Learning to listen to these signs from your body is a powerful tool and gives you so much information about how you can become happier and healthier.

The queen of your menstrual cycle is ovulation. A strong ovulation will make sure you have high enough levels of oestrogen and progesterone which again provide you with several health benefits. The length of your cycle is determined by when you ovulate, which means that you don't technically get a shorter or longer cycle based on when you get your period, but when you ovulate. Your period just follows ovulation.

In order to get a strong ovulation, you need to make sure your body has enough resources to ovulate. Your lifestyle habits are key players in this. For your body to feel safe to ovulate it generally needs enough rest, food, sleep, and overall good health. Factors that will affect this are different stressors in your life, the quality of your relationships, physical activity, and your thoughts and feelings. What the body needs to thrive will of course be different for every body and different seasons of life.

What is Cycle Syncing?

Cycle syncing is all about aligning your lifestyle and activities with the natural phases of your menstrual cycle. By living in sync with your cycle, you can better manage your energy levels, hunger, mood, and even productivity. I can't wait to share about this journey with you and how you can take the power of cycle syncing and bring more balance and harmony into your life.

Keep in mind that every body is different and you might have a different flow in energy levels and mood than presented here. That is ok. This is more of a general breakdown and what happens for many during the different hormone fluctuations. Find what works for you. To start I recommend in some way to keep track of your energy levels, moods and hunger levels for a couple of cycles to get an idea of how you flow. You can use an app, write notes on your phone or a beautiful piece of paper.

The Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle

To truly embrace and sync with your menstrual cycle, it’s essential to understand its four distinct phases. Each phase has unique characteristics and impacts on your body and mind, and they can be beautifully compared to the four seasons. Let’s break them down:

1. Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5) - Inner Winter

This phase kicks off the cycle, beginning on the first day of bleeding and typically lasting between 3-6 days. During this time, the body sheds the uterine lining, resulting in bleeding. Hormone levels, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, are at their lowest.

Like winter, this is a period of rest, renewal, and reflection. It’s a time to slow down, hibernate, and focus on self-care.

2. Follicular Phase (Days 6-14) - Inner Spring

Starting after menstruation and lasting until ovulation, the second phase is a time of preparation and growth. Oestrogen levels begin to rise, leading to the thickening of the uterine lining.

This phase is marked by increased energy and creativity, similar to the blossoming and revitalisation of spring. It’s the perfect time to start new projects and embrace fresh beginnings.

3. Ovulation Phase (Days 14-16) - Inner Summer

Ovulation typically occurs around the midpoint of a 28-day cycle. Just before ovulation, oestrogen levels peak, then drop shortly after.

This phase is characterised by high energy and optimal communication skills, much like the vibrant and energetic vibes of summer. It’s an excellent time for socialising, high-intensity activities, and peak performance.

4. Luteal Phase (Days 15-28) - Inner Autumn

Following ovulation, in the luteal phase both progesterone and oestrogen levels initially rise, then fall at the end of the cycle.

This phase often involves a gradual decline in energy and the onset of premenstrual symptoms, mirroring the winding down and introspection of autumn. It’s a time for completion, organisation, and preparing for the next cycle.

How to Align your Lifestyle with each phase

Now that we understand the four phases of the menstrual cycle and their seasonal counterparts, let's explore how you can align our lifestyle to flow with your body. Embracing the unique energy and characteristics of each phase can help you lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Menstrual Phase (Winter)

Rest and Reflection:

  • This is your time to slow down, rest, and recharge. Just as nature takes a break in winter, give yourself permission to do the same.

  • Focus on self-care activities like warm baths, journaling, and gentle stretching or yoga. Reflect on the past month and set intentions for the new cycle.

  • Meditation, and deep breathing can be incredibly soothing.

Nourishing Foods:

  • Opt for warming and nutrient-dense foods to support your body during bleeding. Think soups, stews, and iron-rich vegetables like spinach and kale.

  • Stay hydrated with herbal teas and plenty of water.

The Perfect Period Rituals

Follicular Phase (Spring)

Energy and Creativity:

  • As your energy begins to rise, embrace the renewal and growth that comes with spring. This is an excellent time to start new projects and set goals.

  • Engage in activities that stimulate your creativity, such as brainstorming sessions, art, or trying new hobbies. New ideas are likely to flow effortlessly.

Social Interaction:

  • Plan social events, networking opportunities, and collaborative projects. Your communication skills and social levels are enhanced during this phase.

  • Enjoy workouts with higher levels of energy. Just make sure you also get enough rest.

Nourishing Foods:

  • During the follicular phase, your body benefits from light and fresh foods. Think fresh salads, lean proteins, and vibrant fruits and veggies.

  • Incorporate foods rich in phytoestrogens like flax seeds and sesame seeds, which can help balance your hormones naturally.

Ovulation Phase (Summer)

Peak Performance:

  • Just like the height of summer, this is your time to shine! Use this phase to take important meetings, go on dates, and try new things.

  • Your confidence and energy are at their peak, making it a great time for activities that require you to be at your best. Enjoy the vibrant social energy of this phase.

Balanced Diet:

  • Focus on a balanced diet rich in proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Staying hydrated is also crucial during this high-energy phase.

Luteal Phase (Fall)

Completion and Organization:

  • As your energy begins to wane, focus on completing tasks, organising your space, and tying up loose ends. This phase is about winding down and preparing for the next cycle.

  • Engage in more introspective activities, like reading, meditation, and light exercise.

  • Dancing and shaking can also benefit by helping the body release built up tension and release endorphins. This helps maintain emotional balance as your body winds down.

Comfort Foods:

  • Incorporate comfort foods that stabilise blood sugar levels and help manage premenstrual symptoms. Magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and dark chocolate can help with mood stability and reducing cramps.

Final Thoughts

Living in sync with your menstrual cycle is a beautiful way to honour your body’s natural rhythms and enhance your well-being. By understanding the unique characteristics of each phase and aligning your activities and lifestyle accordingly, you can lead a more balanced, stress-free, and fulfilling life. Remember, everybody's cycle is unique, so listen to your body and adjust these tips to suit your needs.
