How to be Happy and Healthy
Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about a life that's less hurried and more joyful? I know I have. A couple of years ago, I was caught up in the fast-paced whirlwind of daily life, constantly chasing deadlines and feeling completely exhausted. Eventually it had to stop, my body was screaming at me to make changes. I discovered a different way of living—one that embraced balance, mindfulness, and joy in the simplest moments.
I want to share with you the essence of this lifestyle. Know that you don't have to make drastic changes right away, but rather focus on small, meaningful shifts in your daily routine that align with your values. Let’s dive into the ways of living a more balanced, fulfilling life, inspired by some of the world's healthiest and happiest communities.
The Art of Slow Living
One of the first lessons I learned is the importance of slowing down. So often speed is equated with success, but this mindset can so easily lead to burnout and a lack of fulfilment. Embracing slow living means savouring each moment and focusing on the quality of your experiences.
1. Mindful Mornings
Start your day with intention. Instead of rushing out of bed and into your to-do list, take a few moments to breathe deeply and set a positive tone for the day. You could incorporate a short meditation, some gentle stretching, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of tea while watching the sunrise.
2. Disconnect to Reconnect
In our digitally driven lives, it’s easy to feel constantly plugged in. Schedule regular digital detoxes, where you step away from screens and immerse yourself in the real world. Spend this time engaging in activities that nourish your soul, whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or practising a hobby you love.
3. Quality Over Quantity
Focus on doing fewer things, but doing them well. Whether it’s in your personal or professional life, aim for depth rather than breadth. This approach not only reduces stress but also increases your sense of accomplishment and fulfilment.

Nourishing Your Body
Nutrition plays a vital role in our overall well-being. It’s not just about what we eat, but how we eat. Here are some tips to nourish your body and enjoy the process:
1. Eat Whole Foods
Focus on whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in nutrients. Think fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These foods provide essential vitamins and minerals that support your health and vitality. I think most of us are aware of this, but it is not always so easy to get into a busy daily routine. Focus on adding something small to every meal, it could be sprinkles of seeds on your morning toast, or to eat a piece of fruit after dinner. Small add-ons here and there, really make a difference.
2. Seasonal Veggies
Incorporating more fruit and veggies into your diet can have numerous health benefits. Fruits and veggies are vibrant and satisfying. If possible, eat what’s in season. Frozen berries and veggies are nutrient packed, budget friendly, and a great option for the colder months.
3. Mindful Eating
Make mealtimes a mindful experience. Sit down, savour each bite, and pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Avoid distractions like TV or scrolling while eating, allowing yourself to fully enjoy the flavours and textures of your food. This one is tough, I know. It can take some time to get used to, and that is totally okay. It doesn't have to be every meal straight away, ease your way into it.
4. Stay Hydrated
Water is essential for our health, yet it’s easy to neglect. Learn to listen to your body and drink when you are thirsty, and remember to include electrolyte to optimise hydration. I love adding lime or lemon and Celtic Sea Salt to my water. But my absolute favourite way to stay hydrated, especially in summer, is to make mixed drinks with herbal teas or coconut water. They are super delicious. In winter time I am all about hot herbal teas or comforting broths.
Move your Body
Physical activity is crucial for maintaining a healthy body and mind. Find ways to stay active that bring you joy and keep you engaged. Incorporate movement into your daily routine in easy ways. Small changes can add up and make a big difference in your overall well being. Do something to move your body every day.
Find activities that you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or practising yoga. When you love what you do, it’s easier to make it a regular part of your life. For me, it´s gardening and dancing.
Embracing a Holistic Lifestyle
Holistic health is about caring for your body, mind, and spirit as a whole. Here are some practices to help you achieve a balanced and holistic lifestyle:
1. Practice Self-Care
Self-care is essential. Make time for activities that recharge your batteries, whether it’s a relaxing bath, a hobby you love, or simply some quiet time alone. Prioritise your well-being, and you’ll have more energy and positivity to share with others. Incorporating healthy boundaries is an important part of self-care that sometimes gets overlooked.
2. Connect with Nature
Spending time in nature has numerous benefits for our physical and mental health. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting by the ocean, nature has a way of soothing our souls and bringing us back to balance.
3. Cultivate a Positive Mindset
Your thoughts have a powerful impact on your reality. Practice gratitude, focus on the positive aspects of your life, and let go of negativity. Maybe start a gratitude list where you write down things you are thankful for each day. This simple practice can shift your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right in your life. Be mindful of the content you consume and the people you surround yourself with. Try to limit exposure to negativity and instead engage in activities that bring you joy.
4. Spiritual Practices
Incorporate spiritual practices into your daily routine, whatever that means for you. It could be meditation, prayer, journaling, or simply spending a few moments in quiet reflection. These practices can help you connect with your inner self and find peace and clarity. They can also help reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance emotional resilience.
Sense of Purpose
Having a sense of purpose can greatly enhance your happiness and fulfilment. It gives your life direction and meaning, and motivates you to get out of bed each day with enthusiasm.
1. Identify Your Passions
Take some time to reflect on what truly excites and inspires you. What are your passions and interests? How can you incorporate them into your daily life? Pursuing your passions can bring immense joy and satisfaction.
2. Give Back
Helping others can be incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s through volunteering, acts of kindness, or simply being there for a friend in need, giving back creates a sense of purpose and connection.
3. Stay Social
Social connections are a vital component of a happy, healthy life. Make time for friends and family, engage in community activities, and build a support network. Being socially active can boost your mood, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being. Maybe you can find or start a local club or group that interests you. Whether it's a book club, a dinner club, yoga class, or a hiking group, being part of a community can bring a sense of belonging and joy.
4. Establish a Purposeful Routine
Having a sense of purpose and a routine can bring structure and meaning to your days. This doesn’t mean sticking to a rigid schedule but rather finding a rhythm that works for you. Start your day with positive morning rituals like stretching, a healthy breakfast, or a few minutes of meditation. A good morning routine sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. Create a calming evening routine to unwind before bed. This could include activities like reading, gentle yoga, or a warm bath.
5. Goals
Set small, achievable goals for yourself. This could be as simple as finishing a book, learning a new recipe, or starting a hobby. Achieving these goals can give you a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
Embrace Slow and Intentional Living
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush. Embracing slow and intentional living can help you appreciate the present moment and reduce stress. For example, take time to savour your meals without distractions. Pay attention to the flavours, textures, and colours of your food. This practice can enhance your eating experience and improve digestion. Take time away from technology. Designate tech-free times during your day to connect with yourself and your surroundings. Simplify your life by decluttering your space and simplify your schedule. Focus on activities and possessions that truly bring you joy and let go of the rest.
Listen to Your Body
Your body will always communicate what it needs. Learning to truly listen to and honour your body can lead to better health and well-being. For example if you’re feeling tired, allow yourself to rest and recharge, instead of pushing through. Eat when you’re hungry and drink when you are thirsty. For women, syncing your activities and diet with your menstrual cycle can be a powerful way to support your well-being. Understand the phases of your cycle and align your lifestyle with them to experience better flow.
